The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Virginia is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring professionally supported one to one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.

Matching dedicated volunteers with deserving children is what we do best. As a volunteer, you have an opportunity – not only to impact a child’s life today, but to transform their potential for tomorrow.

By matching a volunteer with a child in need, we not only give that child hope for his or her future, but we create a culture of giving back to the community.  Through the efforts of our volunteers, we change lives…for the better!

According to the U.S. Department of Education, college credits earned prior to high school graduation reduce the average time-to-degree and increase the likelihood of graduation. For parents, it’s an opportunity to reduce future college expenses by shortening the time to college graduation.

ACHIEVING

Above the High.png

Your middle and high school years can be time of rapid growth, increased responsibility, exploration, independence, and the onset of risk taking. Taking risks with new behaviors provides youth the opportunity to test your skills and abilities and discover who you are and who you want to be. But, some risk behaviors—such as using alcohol, tobacco and drugs—can have harmful and long-lasting effects on a teen’s health and well-being.

The teen years can also be filled with so much excitement such as dating, landing your first job, getting your driver’s license, going to prom, or preparing for graduation.  However, sometimes it can get overwhelming because there is so much happening all at once. Knowing how to properly handle your emotions, make good decisions, communicate effectively, and set goals are important skills to practice because they will help you stay on a healthy path to success.

MENTORING SERVICES

Is your child or teenager (Ages 5-21) in need of a positive role model, who will offer them support in all life scenarios? Research shows that youth who utilize mentoring have higher chance of graduation and college enrollment. Anderson Mentors develop a close bond with your child by incorporating fun activities with unconditional support. This bond further models how to develop strong relationships with other family members, peers, and teachers. Mentoring offers education, through actions, for the following areas:

  • Improve Self-Esteem

  • Social and Life Skills

  • Stress Management

  • Conflict Resolution Skills

  • Healthy Relationships

  • Problems Solving Techniques

  • Positive Community Interaction
